It seems that every family of young children I’ve ever encountered has their “go to” playground or park and my family is no exception. While I didn’t go looking for a new park one day, I’m happy to say that Deyermond Park has been added to our personal playground repertoire. My kids aren’t yet in organized sports - they’re only one and three - so we don’t typically find ourselves at the many baseball or soccer fields around town. But, after driving past the play structure at Deyermond Park and promising my three year old that we could come back the next day when we didn’t have groceries in the car, I’m happy that we’ve chosen to spend some time here.
Situated on former farmland not far from the Tewksbury line, Deyermond Park consists of soccer and baseball fields as well as a play structure. The play structure is moderately sized and positioned on soft mulch with nearby grassy areas. There is a company-provided label for the structure that indicates that it is meant for ages five to 12; however, after supervising my own kids there it proves that it has something for everyone! There are three slides of varying heights. The smallest slide is accessed by a ramp that allowed my non-walking one year old to crawl up on her own, sit at the top of the slide and slide down independently to me, something that we haven’t found readily at the other parks we frequent. Usually there’s a tunnel that I end up having to coax her through or a wobbly bridge that is a bit too tall for her. The other two slides are MUCH taller and are accessed via a spiral of stairs appropriate for a variety of ages. There are a few other access points, probably meant for older kids, that involve climbing rock walls or angled ladders. Actually, the tallest slide made me wonder if it was too tall for my crew. But after watching my three year old slide again and again without needing an adult to supervise her landing, my slight hesitation eased. While my one year old really wanted to climb those spiral stairs too I did not let her test out the two tall slides. In addition to three slides mentioned, the play structure has two separate rock walls (one that’s at least nine feet tall and brings the climber up to the tallest slide), monkey bars, a web of wobbly ladders, and a few other things to scale or traverse.
The biggest drawback about the Deyermond Park play structure is there are no swings, usually a non starter for me when it comes to choosing our playground for the day. But the fact that my differently-abled kids could have an equally enjoyable time makes me reconsider the need for swings. The attached pictures were taken at 10:00 AM on a Friday and we had the play area entirely to ourselves. So, if you’re looking to switch up your playground routine and try somewhere new keep Deyermond Park in mind. Do be mindful though, if there are any ball games happening on the adjacent fields you won’t find the play area nearly as empty.
