Free Freshwater Fishing Weekend in Massachusetts June 4-5 2022

By Barbara Evangelista, Publisher May 10, 2022

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife has set the weekend of June 4-5 2022 as a Free Fishing Weekend.  No fishing license is needed for individuals 15 and up to fish any public freshwater lake, pond, reservoir, river or stream statewide from 12:00 A.M. Saturday June 4th until 11:59 P.M. Sunday June 5th, 2022.

It's important to know that all other regulations, such as seasons (dates when certain types of fish can be kept), minimum length (fish must be over a certain length to be kept) and species, must be followed.  Any fish that is caught that doesn't meet the state requirements must be immediately released back into the water.

New to fishing?  See the Freshwater Fishing Information section on the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife website for information on licenses, where to learn to fish, what kind of equipment and bait you need, and links to freshwater fishing maps.

While you can fish for free on June 4th and 5th, a license is required at all other times for those 15 years of age or older. Note that fishing licenses are free for youths age 15 to 17 but they must obtain and carry the license when fishing.  More information on MA fishing licenses.
