If your children are like mine, then they’re collectors. Which means that we can not simply toss our pails of shells back into the sand after a day at the beach. The treasures follow us home. Here are 5 simple ways to put those bucketfuls to good use! Also, don't forget to scroll down to read about the FREE enrichment class next week!
- Sorting - Decide which attribute(s) (size, color, shape, type) you’d like to sort by. Put out a paper plate, bag, or container for each attribute you choose. Encourage your child to describe (i.e. “This shell is small and brown) each shell to you before placing it in it’s designated spot; compare and contrast the shells, how’re some the same or different?
- Sensory bins - Pour the shells into a shallow bin or bowl with measuring cups, tongs, spoons, small trucks and have your child scoop and fill. Encourage vocabulary related to their actions (i.e. scooping, filling, sifting, filling, pouring).
- Experiment - Fill a bowl or small bin with water, or bring the shells right into the bathtub, do they sink or float? Make predictions; compare the ones that sink versus the ones that float, how’re they different?
- Painting - Encourage the use of color words and asking questions by laying out the paints so that your child must request what they need from you (i.e. Could I please have the yellow paint?). (White scallop and clam shells work best)
- Scavenger hunt - Hide the shells around your home or yard. Work on listening and understanding of language by giving your child clues as to where they can find the shells (i.e. go to the backyard, look under the bush with pink flowers).
