Identify the Signs

By Jaclyn Scarsella, MS CCC-SLP May 11, 2018

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month (BHSM)!  This month raises awareness of communication disorders, and promotes and celebrates the knowledge, dedication, and remarkable impacts of Speech Language Pathologists.

What is Speech?

The ability to physically produce the sounds and sound pattern (articulation) of language with the appropriate rhythm and vocal quality.

What is Language?

Language is the symbolic, rule governed system that is used to convey a message.  In English, the symbols can be spoken or written words.

What is Communication?

Communication is the process used to convey a message in order to establish a shared understanding with others.

Screening events are held during the month of May to increase awareness of developmental milestones and to promote early detection of communication disorders.
